German spy Mata Hari in 1917
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle was raised in the Dutch East Indies where she married an alcoholic Scotsman named Macleod. Leaving him, she travelled to Europe where she made a name for herself (Mata Hari - it means Eye of the Morning) as an exotic dancer and for her string of affairs with French officers. In 1917, she was arrested and sentenced to death by a French courts martial for allegedly passing on pillow talk to German intelligence. She was executed in October
