Sinking of the ship Falaba The sinking of the "Falaba"
Sinking of the ship Falaba
The sinking of the " Falaba". Passengers onboard the stricken liner search for available life boats. The British liner " Falaba" was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the waters around Britain, an event important for two main reasons. Firstly, it marked the escalation of the U-boat campaign against shipping around the British coast. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, it caused the first official death of a US citizen. The man, Leon C. Thrasher, drowned after jumping from the sinking ship. His death caused outrage in the US, the government calling for " Strict accountability". Although the US had feared such an event for some time, it focussed attention onto the potential threat to their citizens abroad, a threat became far more real with the sinking of the liner the " Lusitania" a short while later.
