Miss Sylvia Pankhurst being re arrested after recovering from her hunger strike
Miss Sylvia Pankhurst being re arrested after recovering from her hunger strike experiences in early 1913.. Miss Pankhurst was arrested under the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill-Health) Act 1913. It was known as the Cat and Mouse Act.
The Act allowed the Home Secretary to free the suffragettes when they had starved themselves almost to the point of permanent harm and required them to report back to prison.
Miss Pankhurst was released eight times but never returned to Holloway when she was meant to. Scotland Yard Special Branch detectives had to re-arrest her each time.
