A German dayliht raid scored a direct hit on the overall roof, causing it to partially collapse, trapping a train underneath, crushing the coaches and wrecking the tank engine.
Seven people were killed. Just 40 hours afterwards the platforms have been cleared and the tracks repaired so the first train could steam out - a phenomenal tribute to the LNER railways staffs dedication and guts. Middlesbrough Station damaged during a Nazi air raid. Forty hours after the raid, the first train is shown leaving. November 3rd 1942
