London Blitz Bomb Damage 1940 WW2
Smoke rises from behind the dome of St Pauls Cathedral after the first daylight bombing raid by the Luftwaffe (German Airforce) on the docks and the East End of London in September 1940. The Luftwaffes change of tactics from bombing RAF fighter bases at the height of the Battle of Britain to bombing London followed the RAF bombing raid on Berlin. This raid had been ordered by Winston Churchill after London was accidentally bomb at the end of August 1940 when a flight of Luftwaffe bombers lost their way during a night attack on the fuel depots along the Thames Estuary and dumped their bombs on the East End of London.
