This mammoth aircraft, with a wingspan of 230ft and fuselage length 177ft

This mammoth aircraft, with a wingspan of 230ft and fuselage length 177ft, was the largest land plane ever built in Britain.
ItIs a Bristol Type 167 Brabazon and has eight Bristol Centaurus engines driving four pairs of contra-rotating propellers.
Constructed at Filton in Bristol between 1944 and 1949 it cost of £ 3 million (near to £ 300million today) and was projected to carry an economical load from London-New York.
It is pictured here on 4th September 1949 during its first flight with A J (Bill) Pegg at the controls.
It failed to live up to expectations and all work suspended in 1952, the aircraft, and a partly built second one, being broken up a year later.
