Home Guard at Coal Mine
Home Guard was formed in 1940 when there was a real risk of invasion. Most men who could fight were already in the forces.Thoe that were left were either too young, too old or in reserved occupations (jobs vital to he war effort). The men who volunteered for the Home Guard at this time were expected to fight an invasion of crack German troops with nothing more than a collection of old shotguns and pieces of gas pipe with bayonets welded on the end. The government was hoping to get 150, 000 men to volunteer. Within the first month 750, 000 men had volunteered and within another two weeks the total number was over 1 million. The total never fell under one million until they were disbanded in December 1944. During their short life the Home Guard were given the honour of mounting a guard at Buckingham Palace twice. An honour many of the established regiments have never been given
