This Supermarine S6 seaplane was Britains entry in the annual Schneider Cup Races
This Supermarine S6 seaplane was Britains entry in the annual Schneider Cup Races 1928. Here, R J Mitchell, the aircrafts designer, supervising work by searchlight at Calshott during August 1928.
The S6, flown by F/O H R Waghorn, went on to win the race at an average speed of 328.6mph. Much that was gained from the design and operation of these racing aeroplanes went towards the success of Mitchells Supermarine Spitfire.
Reginald Mitchell the designer in his plus fours trousers seen at the right overseeing work being carried out on the seaplane by searchlight at 10pm at night.
Security is provided by an armed guard who stands nearby with his rifle and bayonet. 4science - Academic / Education - 25/02/2010
