Framed Print of The Bowery, noted in legend and fact as a home for New Yorks alcoholics
The Bowery, noted in legend and fact as a home for New Yorks alcoholics, prostitutes and the homeless, was originally Dutch colonial farmland. When the Dutch settled in Manhattan in the 1600s the land that runs diagonally from present day Chatham Square to the crossing of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street was an Indian Trail. By the 1880s the once vibrant Bowery had deteriorated into New Yorks skid row and would remain as such until urban renewal transformed the area deep in the twentieth century.
This picture shows a scene directly after World War II, when The Bowery had become a sargasso of human wreckage. Where a war veteran could go his own way with a minimum of outside interference. Into the vortex, inevitably drifting the weakest strata of Americas vast population - the discouraged, the lonely, the mentally broken and the alcoholics. © Mirrorpix
