Squadron of Fairey Swordfish planes on board HMS Ark Royal prepare to launch from

Squadron of Fairey Swordfish planes on board HMS Ark Royal prepare to launch from the flight deck
during WW2.
The Ark Royal that served in WW2 was in fact the Ark Royal III. The Ark Royal III was in the limelight more frequently than any other Royal Navy Warship during her relatively short career. Most notably for her involvement in chasing the Graf Spee (Germanys famous pocket battleship) and playing a key role, along with Force H, in the destruction of the mighty German battleship Bismarck, pride of the Kriegsmarine. All this after having been hailed as being sunk by the German Ministry of Propoganda at the very beginning of the war. However, she was torpedoed by the German U-boat, U-18, on the 13 November 1941 and did sink, next day, approximately 30-50 miles east of Gibraltar. Biplanes like these Swordfish were used on Aircraft carriers for much of the war.
