By the end of October 1956 the fighting between the pro soviet communists and hastily organised militas had almost stopped. The new government formally disbanded the State Security Police and pledged to re-establish free elections. They also announced their willingness to negotiate with the USSR the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Hungary and the countrys withdrawal from the Warsaw pact. On November 4th a large Soviet force invaded Hungary. In the retaking of the country 700 Russian soldiers and over 2500 Hungarians were killed in the fighting. The Hungarian revolt was finally supressed on November 10th 1956
