Bombadier Billy Wells vs Arthur Townley at the Holborn Stadium, Holborn, London, United Kingdom. This was the former British heayweight title holder, Billy Wells first fight after losing the crown to Joe Beckett in London. Wells was determined to win back his title but to have a chance he had to become the number one contender. In beating Townley he got his chance. He went on to fight Beckett again in 1920, but lost the fight. Wells never got another chance and one of Britains great fighters had had his day. Wells was British heavyweight champion from 1911 to 1919, a very impressive reign and a great champion. Wells went on to be the Rank Corporation gong man, who was seen at the start of all Rank feature films. Our Picture Shows: Townleys corner throwing in the towel. 21st November 1919
