Although British Railways officially finished with steam power on August 11, 1968
Although British Railways officially finished with steam power on August 11, 1968, Alan Peglers contract still allowed him to run Flying Scotsman on the mainline. As the sole steam locomotive on BR, a good crowd turn out to see it at Leamington Spa on September 30, 1968. Preservation excursions took the locomotive far from its East Coast Mainline home, as here onto the alien metals of the ex-Great Western Railway, but a mere warm-up for its travels across the world.
Picture shows: Railway enthusiasts give an enthusiastic welcome at Leamington railway station for the Flying Scotsman.
