Allied Invasion of Normandy, Northern France following the D-Day landings on 6th June
Allied Invasion of Normandy, Northern France following the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944.
British army soldiers of 12 Platoon, B Company, 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers Scots, seen here moving cautiously through alongside a ruined wall in the Normandy village of St. Manvieu-Norrey, remaining cautious of German snipers stationed in the church tower.
The picture is taken on 26th June, the first day of Operation Epsom (also known as the First Battle of the Odon), a British offensive intended to outflank and seize the German-occupied city of Caen, during the Battle of Normandy.
The infantry faced the hardest of tasks, advancing against an almost invisible enemy, acutely vulnerable to machine guns, mortar fire and the snipers bullet.
