Hundreds of cheering workers and wives greeted the Industry Secretary, Mr. Anthony Wedgewood-Benn, when he visited the Meriden motor cycle workers co-operative. Mr Wedgewood-Bell told the workers their persistence and patience throughout the negotiations had made the setting-up of the co-operative possible. He joined the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Dennis Berry, in an informal tour of the Norton Villiers Triumph plant before enjoying a civic dinner in honour of the co-operative. More than 400 workers, wives and families turned out for the visit. They crowded into the works canteen to hear Mr. Wedgewood-Benns speech. He is seen here looking at a Triumph Bonneville 750 motor cycle with his wife Caroline. This particular bike has been designed with a left-foot gear change. Mr Dennis Johnson, chairman of the co-operative committee is on the far left and far right is Mr. Bill Lapworth who is Coventry & District secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union.
