A view of London rarely seen today. The docks have always enjoyed a turbulent history and shortly after this photo was taken the last of the main docks, the Millwall Dock closed down. The end, it appeared, had arrived. A bleak time for the river ensued, yet with new developments and the backing of public and private money the docks in London flourish once more. Not with the cries of dockers and the clanking of mooring chains but with the hustle and bustle of modern city life, the incessant ringing of mobile phones and the constant tapping of thousands of keyboards.
