Mr Oliver Lyttleton, the Secretary of State for the Colonies
Mr Oliver Lyttleton, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, on a visit to Kenya where Mau-Mau terrorists have been becoming more and more active 1952
The Secretary of State for the Colonies, Mr Oliver Lyttleton arrived in Kenya on the 29th of October 1952. He arrived as the Mau Mau crisis was reaching its peak. His first action was to order the detainment of 500 Mau Mau suspects and over the next month this process continued. One of the suspects was Jomo Kenyatta, a Kenyan Nationalist leader believed to be leading the Mau Mau rebellion. Kenyatta was sentenced to seven years hard labour for leading the rebellion, a charge he denied and his supporters claimed he had been framed for. In the west there was also some scepticism of his guilt. He was released in 1961 and in 1963 was elected as Kenyas premier.
