Men from the Lancashire Fusiliers, based up country at Fort Hall in the Kikuyu reserve
Men from the Lancashire Fusiliers, based up country at Fort Hall in the Kikuyu reserve on their first anti Mau-Mau patrol in a forest that the Kikuya believe to be sacred 1952
The Kikuya tribe live within and around Nairobi in the so called " White highlands" an area popular with European settlers. The Kikuya were targetted by the Mau Mau for recruitment, often forced to take the Mau Mau oath at knifepoint. Patrols like these into the Kikuya homelands were designed to dislodge Mau Mau activists. They had some success, aided as they were by local trackers, yet the Mau Mau were too large in number to be wiped out by these small scale sorties.
October 1952.
British troops were sent to Kenya on the 19th of October 1952 to help deal with the growing Mau Mau uprising. Mau Mau members were travelling around openly throughout the day using pangas (blades) and firearms to attack their victims. Once the British army arrived the Mau Mau were forced out of the towns and into more wooded areas in the hills around Nairobi. Thsi didn t resolve the problem however. The attacks continued and even regular sweeps through the forests with Kenyan trackers failed to dislodge the Mau Mau. In the end despite the rounding up of thousands of suspects it was decided that the only solution was to offer an amnesty to theMau Mau, a move that incensed the white land owners.
