Fire fighters tackle a blaze in a London street.
Y2K WW2
On the night of 29 December 1940, the Luftwaffe dropped 10, 000 fire bombs on the City of London, having already destroyed the mains water supply in an operation timed to coincide with a tidal low point in the Thames. For a while there was little that the firemen could do to prevent the spread of the fire but eventually another supply was hooked up. Even so, by this point the fire had spread dramatically and the auxilliary fire service fought the blaze for hours before getting it under control with the help of soldiers and civilians.
