The Red Arrows were in Coventry to thank the men who build the engines which have helped

The Red Arrows were in Coventry to thank the men who build the engines which have helped make them a world-famous aerobatic team. For the past 14 years the formation flying team have flown Gnat aircraft powered by the Orpheus engine, which is assembled at the Rolls Royce Ansty plant and uses componenents manufactured at the Parkside plant in Coventry. Later this year the Red Arrows are to change to the Hawk aircraft powered by the Rolls Royce Adour engine built in Derby. So the nine-man team decided to visit both Coventry plants to say a personal thankyou to the men who make the Orpheus engine. At Parkside they were presented with a set of engraved fan blades from an Orpheus engine by the director and general manager at Rolls Royce Coventry, Mr John James. He said that Rolls Royce had been proud to be associated with the airmanship, precision and self-dicipline which the team had shown. The team leader, Squadron Leader Brian Hoskins said tha the past 14 years 54 different pilots had flown with the Red Arrows and that the Coventry-built engine had always proved reliable and safe. The changeover to the Hawk will not, however, end their links with the area. Their new aircraft will be serviced and maintained at the British Aerospace plant at Bitteswell, near Lutterworth.
