Dame Sybil Hathway, feudal ruler of the Channel Island of Sark, has caused a stir with the announcement that she wants to hand over her control to the nearby island of Guernsey. The 85-year-old Dame, who is answerable only to the Queen, complains that too many of her islanders are ignoring the traffic and licensing laws. There are no cars on the island, only a few tractors, horses and carts, and the Dames own electric invalid carriage. At present the islanders pay no income tax, and they fear that this happy situation will end if there is a takeover by Guernsey, where tax is paid
Meanwhile to add more confusion to the matter Sir William Arnold the all-powerfull Bailiff of Guernsey said: Sark may need some changes, but that is a far cry from taking over lock, stock and barrel."
