This Canadair C-4 transport was developed in Canada; based on the American Douglas DC-4 the C-4 was powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.
Its first flight was on 20 July 1946 and initially B.O.A.C. Trans Canada Air Lines and the Canadian Air Force who between them had the total production of 71 operated it.
Known as the Argonaut with BOAC it continued in service until 1958 when BOAC sold them to other operators.
This picture was taken at London Heathrow Airport where it was used to help demonstrate the lifting by air cushion of damaged aircraft March 1970.
The Hovermove System lifts a 26-ton Argonaut DC4 aircraft on a cushion of air. The weight of the aircraft is supported by the inflated air bags beneath the wings and fuselage
