Margaret Allison did not stumble over the "wedding stone"
Margaret Allison did not stumble over the " wedding stone" and a plate which was thrown for luck broke when it hit the ground - so she will have many blissful years of marriage. According to the legends of Holy Island, Northumberland, where Margaret was married this week-end, if she had stumbled, or if the plate had not smashed, she would have had bad luck. To make sure nothing so sad happened, the two oldest fishermen helped her over the stone, just outside the church door. It is supposed to represent the first obstacle in her new life. Most of the 242 people living on Holy Island, just off the Northumberland coast, went to see Margaret, the local innkeepers daughter, married to George Teago, of Seahouses, Northumberland. It was the first wedding on the island for nine years. February 1952 P005081
