The De Havilland D. H. 80A Puss Moth The HeartOs Content with a D. H
The De Havilland D.H.80A Puss Moth The HeartOs Content with a D.H. Gipsy Major engine is pictured over the Atlantic with Jim Mollison at the controls August 1932.
He was making the first solo east west crossing of the North Atlantic on 18-19 August 1932. Leaving from a beach at Portmarnock, just north of Dublin, he made the crossing in 31 hours 20 minutes, landing at Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick.
To give it the necessary range of 3, 600 miles the aircraft was given a 160-gallon fuel tank and extra windows; Mollison sat behind the fuel tank. It was one of the greatest solo flights; it was the first in a light aeroplane, the fastest and longest non-stop flight. Puss Moths can still be seen flying today.
