Grovely! Grovely! and all Grovely!"proclaim the inhabitants of Wishford, Wiltshire
Grovely! Grovely! and all Grovely!" proclaim the inhabitants of Wishford, Wiltshire, during the Oak Apple Day procession from the village to Salisbury Cathedral. The custom, part of the celebrations held each year on May 29, commemorates an old-established right of the villagers to collect firewood from the neighbouring forest of Grovely. At one time the villagers danced from Wishford to the Cathedral. Now, the six-mile journey is made by coach. Outside the Cathedral a traditional dance is performed. There the villagers process up the aisle where, before the High Altar, they proclaim, " Grovely! Grovely! and all Grovely". Here, women of the village wearing traditional dress, are seen bearing above their heads oak faggots gathered from Grovely woods. The women commemorate the memory of a Grace Reed of Barford St. Martin and her companions who in the Nineteenth Century stoutly defended the rights of the villagers. June 1959 P005052
