World War II Women: Only 4ft. 11 ins in height, Private Phyllis Lawrie, of the ATS works side by side with British and American troops on the roof of the Stage Door canteen, in Piccadilly. She shovells sand and lays bricks, helps with knocking down walls, where she can handle a hammer and chisel like any man. She volunteered for this job and is very keen on it. The job offers no extra pay but plenty of hard work. Her husband is abroad. Phyllis comes from Cornwall. The Navy give Phyllis a cigarette and a light, during one of the few breaks these volunteers have. May 1944 P010166
