The Vickers Viscount was a great British success story.
This Viscount 700 named Endeavour is pictured prior to departure in the London-New Zealand air race on 12th October 1953.
Jointly entered by Vickers and BEA, and flown by Capt W Baillie and crew, it took 40 hours 41 minutes to cover the 12, 365 miles to Christchurch.
It played a small part in promoting this turbo-prop aircraft powered by four Rolls-Royce Dart engines that became the most successful aircraft to emerge from post-war Britain.
There were more Viscounts built than any other British airliner with over 450 by the time construction ceased in 1959.
First flight of the original series 630, 32-seat version was from Wisely, Surrey on 16 July 1948 and by the time the 800 series appeared seating had increased to 86.
Operated throughout the world by numerous airlines, a few can still be seen in flying today.
