Belated charge of the fashion brigade. You need courage to put on a fashion show in the Kings Road, London. The locals there have no difficulty whatever in setting their own fashion pace. But to march into this fashionable Chelsea, London, street and try to revive a fashion that is, to say the least, a little dated, needs just a little bit more courage. On Thursday (28-3-68), United Artists found that extra courage, and marshalled their Charge of the Light Brigade fashions in the Duke of Yorks Barracks in a bold bid to bring back the military look. There were maxi great coats, tight drummer boy trouser suits, and lots of gold braid. Braemar showed the original garment that Lord Cardigan gave his name to. It turned out to be an off-white vest - not a cardigan at all. But his Lordship might have been delighted with the mini-knit vest dresses which Braemar have adapted from the body-warmer he wore in battle. Harvey Goulds close-cut maxi coats, and ankle length skirts in tartan, with tight velvet weskit and ruffled blouse are just about as far as the modern girl wants to go in Victorian fashion...while her mate is more likely to fancy the many-buttoned navy reefer than yet another variation on the played-out military theme. Which is where we marched in. Laird (left) and Sonia in black Wallis outfits. March 1968 P017563
