On the 14th of June 1958 17 year old Christine Truman became the darling of Wimbledon when she beat Althea Gibson in the Wightman Cup. It was the first time Britain had won the cup since 1930. Three years later Truman reached the final of the Womens Singles at Wimbledon. The historic final saw two British girls meet for the first time since 1914. Truman was the favourite over her rival Angela Mortimer but a fall by Truman, in the second set (she was already one set up) left her limping badly. despite this she only lost by the narrowest of margins, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
