Noel Coward- playwright, screenwriter, novelist, director, producer, actor, composer. Born- Teddington 16/12/1899, died 1973. One of the most creative and controversial figures of British theatre. Wrote many plays, most were sophisticated comedies, wrote novels, two autographical volumes, short stories, and many songs, including the famous " Mad dogs and Englishmen." First film, 1918 " Hearts of the World." 1942- special Academy Award for " In Which We Serve." - WW2 sea saga that he produced, co-directed (with David Lean) scored and starred in.
Laurence Olivier (Later, Lord Olivier.) Born Dorking, Surrey, 22nd May, 1907.Married three times, to Jill Esmond, Vivien Leigh (1940-1960 div.) and Joan Plowwright. 1930- film debut in " too many crooks" Series of roles in classic and modern plays on the London stage brought great critical acclaim over the years. Produced and directed plays at the Old Viv in particular. 1941-44, served in Fleet Air Arm, mainly in entertainment capacity, 1944-49, director of the Old Vic Company; 1945- directed first film, the hugely patriotic, " Henry V" ; 1965-73- Director of the emerging National Theatre. In total Olivier received nine Academy Award nominations and one Best Actor award for Hamlet in 1948, not to mention numerous other awards. Knighted- 1947. Made a peer- 1970 (the first actor to be given this distinction.
Vivien Leigh- Born Darjeeling, India 5th November 1913. Married twice, secondly to Laurence Olivier. 1934- film debut in " Things are L; ooking Up." Followed Olivier to Hollywood and her arrival coincided with the prolonged search to find a suitable acctress to play Scarlet O Hara in " Gone With The Wind." She got the part and it earned her worldwide fame and an Academy Award. Halted her Hollywood career to be with Olivier during the war but made several films in the UK. After the war she concentrated on her stage career. She played Blanche DuBois in the film version of " A Streetcar Named Desire." opposite Marlon Brando. Her own nervousness added to the role so she ended up with yet another Oscar. Her divorce from Olivier weakened her. She did very little acting afterwards and in 1967, while struggling to rehearse with Michael Redgrave for the stage version of Albee s" A Delicate Balance."
