Mary Pickford (1893-1979). One of the earliest superstars of the movies. Also one of the worlds richest women at the height of her fame, pulling in well over a quarter of a million dollars per film at her peak. She formed the United Artists Corporation with Douglas Fairbanks (later to be her second husband), Charlie Chaplin and D.W.Griffith.They were four of the most prominent Hollywood stars of the time and they set up United Artists to produce and distribute their films. The deal, signed on April 17th, 1919, proved to be a very lucrative one for Pickford. She one an Oscar for her part in the film " Coquette" and after that concentrated mainly on producing rather than acting.
