The annual British Academy awards held in London on Sunday March 20 were a personal triumph for Sir Richard Attenborough. His epic film about the charismatic Indian leader Gandhi won five awards: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Role. It also won Sir Richard a fellowship of the Academy, for the classic movie was as much a result of his extraordinary belief and persistence as a cinematic success. Personally he visited the stage three times to collect Best Director, Best Film and the Fellowship awards. Actor Ben Kingsley went twice to receive his Best Newcomer and Best Actor awards and Indian actress Rohini Hattangadi went once for her Best Supporting Role. Now Gandhi is expected to consolidate its British triumph when the American Oscars are handed out. But as Sir Richard has often pointed out in the past, the British film industry is always winning prizes, but no money.
