Labour Party Conference 1952
Arthur Deakin, the second man to lead the T&G, was born in Warwickshire in 1890, the son of a cobbler. He started work in a South Wales steel plant at the age of 13 and became a trade union activist during the first world war.
Deakin became a full-time union official in 1919. In 1932, he was appointed national secretary of the General Workers trade group of the T&G, later becoming assistant to Ernie Bevin, the unions general secretary.
When Bevin joined the wartime coalition government in 1940, Deakin was appointed the unions acting general secretary. Bevins transition to the political arena was made permanent in 1945, whereupon Arthur Deakin was elected general secretary in his place.
Deakin served as general secretary until 1955, dying shortly before his impending retirement. He is associated with an authoritarian manner of leadership, and was deeply involved in the cold war politics of his time as a fierce anti-communist.. September 1952 C4867-001
