Lincoln - The High Bridge carries Lincolns High Street over the River Witham
Lincoln - The High Bridge carries Lincolns High Street over the River Witham. Incorporated in its structure are the stone ribs of what is believed to be the second oldest masonry arch bridge in the country.
Built of stone with later brickwork, the bridge has been extended from 33ft wide to 87ft wide in various stages a including extension to accommodate a chapel in 1235 and a range of timber buildings in 1540-50.
The original semi-circular barrel vaulted span had five ribs and spanned 22ft.
Still in use today, High Bridge is the only bridge in Britain with a secular medieval building still standing on it. January 1953
