TUC Conference at Blackpool Victor Feather taking pary in a friendly game of cricket at Blackpool Conference, September 1966.
The leader of the TUC, Victor Feather taking part in a friendly game of cricket during the TUC Conference in Blackpool,
Feathers reign as leader of the TUC will be most remembered for his battle with the Prime Minister Ted Heath over his freezing of wages and prices. Heath took the step after the TUC and the CBI failed to agree on what steps to take to try and halt the steep rises in inflation that were crippling the British economy. Feather called Heaths actions " unwise" and was not alone in his criticism. Many MPs were aghast at Heaths actions, believing them to be rash as talks between the two sides had not finished and might still have produced results. This power struggle between the unions and the government was to dominate British domestic politics throughout the seventies. Heath himself was eventually brought down by the unions after they forced Britain into a three day week. His Labour counterparts fared no better. Jim Callaghans government tumbled from power after the unions brought the country to a standstill in what is now rememered as " The Winter of Discontent." Neither side seemed to want to compromise and Britain lurched and stumbled from crisis to crisis. Then, in 1979, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister. The British Trade Union movement, that had spent the seventies returning to its far-left roots now came up against a Prime Minister who not only came from the opposite side of the political spectrum, but who also singularly failed to understand the meaning of the term compromise. As the saying goes, " when an irresistible force meets an immoveable object, something has to give." Thirty four years of consensus had come to an end. The outcome of this new stage of the battle was, in truth, never in doubt, but the end wasn t to come quickly and it wasn t to come without a fight
