Suffragette Annie Kenney Arrested by Police Officers
Oldham cotton-girl Kenny joined the Womens Social and Political Union after hearing Christabel Pankhurst at an Independent Labour Party meeting in 1905. The movement had few working-class members, so Kenney was sent to spread the word in Londons East End. She was arrested with Pankhurst on 13 October 1905 after disrupting a meeting at which Liberal minister Sir Edward Grey was speaking - the first women to be arrested in the Suffrage cause. From then until women were finally given the vote, Kenny campaigned and was continually arrested
