Petula Clark 1958 Variety Club party with Alan Freeman
Singer and actress Petula Clark at a Variety Club Ball with Alan Freeman. Petula Clark remains one of the most commercially succesful female singers in the history of British pop music. She started her career by entertainging British troops during the Second World War with other child artists, like Julie Andrews. She also made her first film during this period, in 1944s " A Medal for the General". She became a chart success by the fifties and in 1961 she relocated to France, mainly to try abd shake off her teenage image. After much success she returned to the charts and her 1964 album " Downtown" also broke into the US charts. The single of the same name was awarded a Grammy and went to number one in the states, making Petula Clark the first British female to top the US charts. This success was followed by a string of top tens in America and Britain. This encouraged the BBC and an American Network to give Clark her own TV shows. As her commercial success faded in the sixties Clark returned to film and also musicals. She starred in 1981s " The Sound of Music" and made her Broadway debut in 1993s " Blood Brothers".
