The first "live" broadcast from the Normandy beachhead took place on Sunday June 18th 1944 when Frank Gillard (BBC) and William Downs (CBS), operating from a Royal Signals truck just off the beaches,
transmitted messages for their respective radio systems.
Gillard's message, which was heard in the 9 o'clock news is claimed to be the first direct BBC transmission of any campaign.
