Coventry Retail Market celebrated its 21st birthday today with the cutting of a huge cake
Coventry Retail Market celebrated its 21st birthday today with the cutting of a huge cake and sherry all round. The circular cake baked in the shape of the market was cut by Mr Arthur Frith, president of the National Market Traders Federation, and was later handed over to the children;s wards at Gulson Hospital and the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, by Councillor Harry Richards, Lord Mayor of Coventry. Thirty of the traders at the market have been there since it was opened by Princess Alexamdra in 1958. The market was heralded, after its opening as one of the best equipped in Europe. It replaced the old market which was destroyed in the blitz during the second world war.
Mrs Pamela Hayling, nursing officer at Gulson Hospital paediatric unit, Coventry, receives the cake from the Lord Mayor, watched by Mr Frith(left), councillors and market traders.
