W.R.U. Cup Final, Cardiff Arms Park, 26th April 1975. Carrying the cup, Llanelli captain Phil Bennett ends a lap of honour chased by Llanelli supporters. THE mystery surrounding a tattered 1976 Llanelli rugby jersey, once worn by legendary Welsh fly-half Phil Bennett, and unearthed in the dusty back-room of a Western Australian rugby club has been solved thanks to a Cardiff born mayor in the city where it was found.
The faded shirt which had languished for years alongside gym equipment and next to a public toilet has now been replicated and framed by Palmyra Rugby Club stalwarts in Perth.
The campaign to revive and prominently display the sporting memorabilia was launched by mayor of Melville, Perth, and club patron Russell Aubrey who demanded it should be "refurbished and placed in the main club as are other jerseys, which arguably were worn by rugby men of lesser significance than Phil."
