Drivers of heavy construction site machinery will be able to attend a new training course
Drivers of heavy construction site machinery will be able to attend a new training course at the Mid-Warwickshire College of Further Education in Leamington. The first week's session was attended by nine plant operators employed by Warwickshire County Council and major construction and quarrying firms. "It has been a most successful pilot project," said Mr. Robert Rattray, leader of the maintenance and plant repair section of the college. "We now hope there will be a big response from the construction industry, keen to send plant operators on the course, so that we can extend our training facilities." Our photo shows Mr Rattray(centre) with the students who were taking part in the basic training course at the college.

"It's eyes down in the office eyes down for a prayer. Then it's down to work. This is the office of Fred Applegate - that's him on the right - who describes himself in his advertising as a "Christian investment consultant." His business is insurance, unit trusts and the like, and it is no secret that he uses the name of the Lord to boost business. In advertisements in religious journals he claims that if you invest with Applegate, you'll get more for your money, leaving a handy surplus for charity. Those morning prayers for staff members are all part of the service: prayers for a good day's business. One of Mr. Applegats's advertisements quoted words from a satisfied client - "one dear lady who has been kind enough to consult me, seeking ways to give the maximum to her Lord for his servants." The advertisement added: "I will gladly explain how you can increase your income - and giving - with resultant joy in your heart. Mr. Applegate, 54, who operates from an office in Torquay, Devon, said: "There are a lot of sharks in my profession, but I'm not one of them. I'm known to thousands of Christians and they all trust me. They can rely on me to give them the best deal." February 1974 P006574
