Fashion 1970's: In defiance of pooff, Dior says: Down go Hemlines
Fashion 1970's: In defiance of pooff, Dior says: Down go Hemlines. Spring will be a little legless this year for those who do their shopping at Christian Dior. Nothing goes any higher than the midi hems on the coat and suit pictured here. And for those clients who aren't midi-minded, Dior designer Jorn Langberg offers only one other choice. And that's even longer - ankle-length. Even the trousers - shown at his Spring-summer collection in London on Tuesday (10-3-70) - were cut at midi-length into culotte dresses. Mr. Langberg thinks that the midi is "feminine and romantic," but there are thousands who would disagree - and they're all women. Among the critics are the members of a new American organisation, Pooff, the society for the Preservation Of Our Femininity and Finances. They have said "piffle" to designers like Mr. Langberg and have pledged never to wear the midi because "It is ugly and ageing." Pooff members also protest that while the hems go down, the prices go up. They have a point. The cheapest number at Dior was £84. March 1970 P017317
